Singing the Spirituals 11am Morning Worship

August 19, 2018 @ 11:00 am - 12:00 pm

Singing the Spirituals

Rev Ian Y Gilmour leads worship. Mezzo soprano Andrea Baker and pianist Richard Lewis of Sing Sistah Sing join this special service of worship during the Festival.  Brigitte Harris directs our choir and musicians.

Ian Gilmour has explored the story of slavery and song over several periods of study leave and shared his findings in concerts, lectures and worship here at St Andrew’s and St George’s West and in the US.  We welcome Andrea and Richard back to St Andrew’s and St George’s West to this special service of worship during the Edinburgh Festival to make music and sing the stories of slavery and liberation held in spirituals.

Our key text is Ephesians 5:15–20.  Music at the service includes

Introit: Carvel Take me to the water
Anthem: Carvel Steal away- Deep river – Swing low

Hogan This little light of mine

plus spirituals from Sing Sistah Sing

Children of all ages are welcome.

After worship come downstairs to the Undercroft for coffee and a chat!

Andrea Baker explores more of her own story in “Sing Sistah Sing” opening tonight (Sunday 19 August) at the landmark Assembly Rooms – just along George Street from St Andrew’s and St George’s West.
